Victims to Victors
Adult Basic Education/General Education Diploma
Basic academic skills instruction and preparation for GED testing including career/technical, college readiness, Special Education, and adult literacy. Instructional delivery methods include classroom, one-to-one, small group, community volunteer tutoring, peer tutoring, computer-aided instruction, cell-to-cell instruction, and educational television. This programming is available at all state correctional facilities.
Career Pathways
Education advisement that assists students to form short, mid, and long term goals for career and life. Students complete an assessment battery and set goals based on interests and needs. Advisement and goal-setting help the student to find value in education. This programming is available at all state correctional facilities.
SOAR
Success for Offenders After Release or SOAR. Career related case management and release preparation provided in cooperation with the New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions. Participants complete intensive career assessment, exploration, goal-setting, and education. Offered at Level I, II, & III facilities.
Vocational
The Education Bureau offers a variety of programs designed to increase student's ability upon release to find a viable career that offers a living wage. Programs vary by facility. Courses offered include: Barbering, Computer Software, Computer Hardware, Automotive Technologies, Carpentry, Electrical, Network Cabling, Food Service Management, Weaving, and Welding. Courses vary by facility.
Cognitive
Courses assisting offenders in recognizing destructive behavior patterns and developing positive, pro-social thinking habits in all areas of their lives. Courses include Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT)®, Moral Reconation Therapy Domestic Violence (MRT-DV)®, Charting A New Course, and Breaking Barriers. Not all courses are offered at every facility.
Family Education
Courses that focus on family reunification including family literacy and skills. Residents learn parenting skills, read to their children on audio or video tape, and meet family obligations during incarceration. Courses offered include Inside Out Dad, Fathers As Readers, P.S. I Love You, and the Prisoner Outreach Program. Not all courses are offered at every facility; however, every facility has some form of family programming.
College
Courses are offered through accredited colleges leading to Associate Degrees and Vocational Certificates. Students complete courses through mailed correspondence and closed-server, distance learning. College courses are provided in partnership with Eastern New Mexico University Roswell (ENMU-R) and Mesalands Community College (MCC). Students may also pursue college education under their own funding through an accredited post-secondary institution. Courses vary by facility.
AmeriCorps
The Corrections Department participates in the federally funded Americorps programs. Through this program, Americorps volunteers serve in New Mexico prisons. Volunteers work in facility education departments, acting as tutors in Adult Basic Education classrooms, offering cognitive programming, working one-on-one with offenders on family reunification, teaching financial literacy workshops, and facilitating life skills workshops. Volunteers not available at all facilities.
