Media Inquiries
If you are a member of the media and have questions about our department or its employees please contact the Public Affairs Director or Public Affairs Coordinator. Your inquiries are always welcome. All New Mexico Corrections Department employee interviews must be coordinated through the Public Affairs Office.
Inmate Media Interviews
Inmates are allowed to give media interviews. First the requesting reporter or news agency must file out the Media Request Form for Inmate Interviews form and send it to the Public Affairs Office. The inmate must respond in writing that they agree to be interviewed. At that point, please contact the Public Affairs Director or Public Affairs Coordinator.

1980 Prison Riot at the "Old Main"February 2, 1980 inmates at the "Old Main" Penitentiary of New Mexico in Santa Fe initiated one of the most known prison riots in Corrections history. At the time of the riot there were close to 1200 inmates in an 800 capacity prison. The conditions proved to be difficult for the inmates due to small living spaces, overcrowding, and the lack of vocational programming. During the 36 hours of the riot, 33 inmates lost their lives, and many inmates and staff were injured.
