Overview

The New Mexico Department of Corrections is committed to the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates within its Prisons. In 2003, the Department adopted the LETRA model for developing and implementing an Emergency Preparedness Program. Emergency Preparedness is a comprehensive system that requires a continuous commitment of personnel and resources to ensure a systematic approach to responding to emergencies. Emergency coordinators are assigned at each Facility and ensure the Department's readiness to respond to emergencies through emergency policy, planning, training, checklists and exercises.

Highlights

  • New custody and non-custody staff attend 3-day training course on emergency preparedness.
  • Newly promoted supervisors attend 4-day training course on emergency preparedness.
  • The NMCD maintains specialized teams CNT/CERT/SORT - (Crisis Negotiation Team, Correctional Emergency Response Team and Special Operations Team) these teams are essential to the facility in an emergency situation.
  • Exercises and Drills are conducted on a monthly and quarterly basis to ensure staff and facility readiness.
