January 2009 - On January 5th, 2009, in following one of the major recommendations of Governor Richardson's Prison Reform Task Force, the New Mexico Corrections Department began a year long risk and needs assessment pilot project at the Reception and Diagnostic Center at CNMCF. For this pilot project the department is utilizing the assessment tool Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions or COMPAS. Developed by criminologists at the Northpointe Institute for Public Management, the instrument is designed to better gauge a prisoner's need for programming and services while incarcerated, and to better prepare an offender for reentry into the community. COMPAS has a gender-specific version for women and it also measures a person's risk of violence and risk for recidivism. In February, the reception and diagnostic center at the women's prison in Grants will embark on the same pilot project.
